Let me see, how long have Sergey, Larry and company been at this game now. Since they were founded in 1998, I guess that makes it at least twelve years. And really, they’ve been doing the same thing for most of those years. That is building the best electronic search engine the world has ever seen. Right? Well, not exactly, I know they’ve been distracted with a whole host of other applications that we simply couldn’t live without. Like the world really needed another office suite, so we have been enthralled with Google Docs. Great! Yes, I know they’re amazing tools, and all, but I’m sure Microsoft or some other little companies bought up my Microsoft would have created something comparable eventually. And, yes I know Gmail is great, it’s one of my favorite email programs. But, they’re still a major problem with the search engine Google has yet to figure out. Maybe they should be concentrating on that.
There are two basic things that determine a websites position in Google, and that is on page content, and links from other sites pointing to the ranking site. Now, we all know that Google has been harping at webmasters for years to just build great content, and you’ll do fine. They never tell us to build links, even though we all do. Quite the opposite, they tell us to stop building links artificially, and just build great content. “Trust us” they say, you’ll do just fine. Oh, how I wish that was really true.
The fact of the matter is Google and other search engines rely heavily on links to determine the importance of any given web page. And, we all know where that has gotten us. Basically, it’s gotten us into a big frigging mess. It’s simply too easy to be gamed. We all know it, and Google knows it too. It’s simply a major design flaw with Google. Trust me, as a webmaster I hate getting links to my site. It is without a doubt my least favorite thing to do in the whole world. Well, except maybe doing yard work, but that’s a whole other thing.
Personally, as a webmaster I’d much rather spend my days writing and creating great content. Articles, music, video, computer games. Anything would be better, then trying to get a bunch of crappy links to my website from a bunch of other webmasters. I’m sure that when Tim Berners Lee came up with the whole HTML hyper linking idea, he had no intention of it being used as a popularity vote for another site. It was simply meant to point to other relevant important information. Since then, it’s been convoluted and prostituted to the point of people being afraid to click on links for fear of being spammed, virused, or God knows what.
I say, it’s time for Google to stop screwing around, and get back to their core business. Stop competing with Microsoft, don’t try to sell me a cell phone, and quit trying to find new and inventive ways to stick crappy advertising in my face. Fix your damn search engine so, back-links become as irrelevant as my old Commodore 64! Then, I can get back to the real business of being a great webmaster. Thank you.
